subdream : Vol. 1, No. 1 - Summer 1996

EDITORS' NOTE

Like a beat of the heart
a thought arises
moved by the soul's breath

Krayem

This first number ofsubdream is the end product of a process which began three years ago as little more than a shared impulse, subsequently adopting the contours of waking dream and - sometimes - nightmare. What were for a long time our own private rapid eye movements are now also yours.

subdream is published by Labyrinth, the Association of English-Language Poets in Vienna, founded concurrently with the journal in October 1993. Our intention is threefold: to provide a forum for work produced by poets living in Vienna and writing in English; to publish English translations of contemporary Austrian poetry; and to feature work by other members of the global poetry community, especially those passing through this city. We seek, above all, to provide an outlet for unpublished writers but will also be publishing interviews with established poets and commentaries on the Austrian and Central European poetry scene. Further emphasis will be placed on multilingual and foreign-language writing (in this case, English poetry by non-native speakers), joint translations, visual and minority poetry and performance pieces.

The primary inspiration forsubdream came from Anne Waldman and Andrew Schelling. We met them when they were teaching at the Schule für Dichtung in Wien, founded by Christian Ide Hintze, together with Chris Loidl and Christine Huber. It was here, too, that we first came into contact with each other, with numerous fellow poets also based in Vienna and with such great poets as Allen Ginsberg, Jack Collom, Jackson Mac Low and Anne Tardos.

To all those who have supported and encouraged us, we express our sincere gratitude.
